Default Large Marconi Order

Looking up a serial number today, I came across an order for 170 R2 gensets for The Marconi Company. Delivery started at 33602 on the 8th August 1944 and was still running in early 1945.

They certainly seem to have had a few hefty wartime orders for engines - would be fascinating to know in more detail what each was for.

Here is what I posted:

33732 was sold on the 2nd March 1945 to Marconi as part of a big order for 170 charging sets. R2 engines, L&C dynamo No 35E703, switchboard No 6068. No service records.

The order started at 33602 in 1944.

I bet reading the day books throws up some interesting and tantalising entries, like what were they used for, and did they survive?.

I've found similar when doing genealogy research.

The original entries are fairly basic, the day books are laid out across two pages, right-hand page is the build detail, left-hand page is where any service information is entered, the engine number being on both sides.

Many, like 33732 are just noted 'As per 33602' with the ancillary bit's serial numbers noted, like dynamos and switchboards.

Occasionally you'll come across a real treasure trove of information, with the service side full of repairs and overhauls.
