Default Stuart Turner P5M Lucas magneto

Hi I have the above engine number 10a 057.it has a lucus magneto type R's 42124d type DB .I have just purchased engine and magneto but it is not giving a spark. When you take the top of it you see a large coil with a brass nipple coming out of it on the top. When I checked for continuity from nipple to earth there wasn't any should there be? Regards

Yes - you should be able to read about 4K ohms to earth. Before you condemn the coil, just make sure that the earth lead is securely attached to an earth point. If it is, then I'm afraid you have the standard "Lucas disease" and your coil needs a rewind.

No reason to struggle... It's not a message, it's a "post", which means that if you can see it then so can the other members of the forum. I'm not sat at the computer all day (I'm getting on with an engine!) which means that you need to be patient and wait for a response - unless somebody else chooses to join in.

I honestly can't remember if the RS1 coil has an earth lead, or earths through the armature to the chassis, but that is the earth that you are looking for, not the mag body to the engine. Obviously the brass dome is one end of the HT coil winding; you just need to be sure that you have found and connected to the other end - just to be certain that it is open circuit.

The alternative is that you send the whole mag to a repairer, and you will get back a rewound, possibly re-magnetised, checked and probably guaranteed mag, which just leaves the engine to sort out.

As has been said before - if you haven't got a "hot" magneto then you're restoring an expensive door stop!
