John Ellis from Perth probably knows as much about Alexander Shanks as anybody, and his excellent book contains many pictures. John is a forum member ("shanks") but an occasional visitor.

I have 2 Shanks engines but my horizontal hot bulb is nothing like your engine and won't help. Having said that, there was nothing unusual about Shanks and if yours has parts missing then the same parts would be missing if it was a Ruston or a National, etc. Surely you can work out for yourself what you need?

Hmmm...

You provided two very poor pictures, that give us very little idea of what you've actually got. I gave you a good contact who might be able to help you. I also pointed out that you are probably best placed to work out what is missing; I believe you got exactly the same response from others on Facebook.

What exactly were you hoping for?

Well here's a bit more nothing.
Your engine is missing a fair few of the parts that go into making it an engine.
If you don't know what those parts are then it's probably best you take advantage the offer to buy it.

Neil.

The photos you have posted are simply inadequate to even give a rough guide as to what is missing.

You'll need deep pockets and/or your own machine shop to get the missing parts cast/machined, plus you'll need patterns/drawings to make the parts from. Personally I would steer clear of an engine with too many missing parts as I have none of the above. There is a reason why incomplete engines pop up from time to time - people pick them up cheaply and don't realise what it takes to complete them. There's a similar Hornsby on FB at the moment. It's already had the useful bits robbed - that's why they are missing.

But some like the challenge of finding/making the parts, as well as the research into identifying them. Usually they are appreciative of any advice comments though.

Each to their own. Personally, there's a few engines I'd not give shed space to, but give me an Amanco flywheel and I'll turn it into a complete engine!
