Surely if it's a hit'n'miss the exhaust tappet clearance should be huge, about 3/4"?

I suggest before you tear anything off or adjust other bits you set the tappet so that the exhaust valve opens a maximum of 1/4" and try that. I suspect you've adjusted it so far the detent can't latch and arrest the pushrod.

Ran it up tonight, sounded perfect until it went back to running really fast. So it was stopped and on further inspection there appears to be a spring broken! Part of the latch mechanism.


I know it's not the best of pictures but it was the best I can do.

Can't work out what's causing this now. Just runs uncontrollably and has to be stopped.
