Default Hit and miss compressor

I spotted this Brunner air compressor for sale at Kingsfold and bought it, very cheaply too.

I'm quite taken with the idea of turning it into an engine - there are a number on Youtube based on these compressors including a hit and miss side shaft engine.

It currently has poppet valves so I'd replace the cylinder head - pleasingly the bore appears unworn.

The crank runs in the iron casting, there is scoring but no detectable play.

I'm not feeling great enthusiasm for the Stuart Turner projects at the moment - given how much I enjoy using the lathe, this will be an enjoyable diversion and something different to show next year.

What I will need is a flywheel for it, the crank measures 0.935"/23.75mm and the hub could have a depth of 2" at most. If you have anything suitable, please let me know - a smaller bore hub would be preferable to one larger than the crank.

I was thinking more along the lines of a conventional four stroke, probably hit and miss but a throttle governed side shaft engine is also quite tempting - I'll see where it goes.

The Lloyd cycle is an interesting thing though! A Paradox engine replica has also been suggested. The Engineers Emporium do sell some suitable flywheel castings, if nothing ready machined turns up I'll use one of those.

You could always leave it as a nicely restored open crank compressor.

Made a start on this tonight, having thought out a few of the details during the week. The scrap bin at work produced a suitable chunk of steel for the cylinder head and a lump of ally to make a compression lowering ring.

Can anyone help with a pair of inlet /exhaust valves please, from an engine around the 50cc mark would be very suitable.

That is lovely, I would have snapped It up if I'd seen it first!
What about some Honda C50 valves? There are probably loads of those available on eBay as there so many snyde Chinese copies about.

Thanks Dan, that's a good shout.

The other thought I had today was to go and see Jon at the mower center (the guy who sells the Villiers coils in SEM) and see if he's got a suitable set of valves kicking around - He's probably got C50 valves in stock knowing him..

A day spent with the lathe, the radio and a job to do is a day well spent...

I've made a good start on the compressor engine and the "combustion chamber ring" is finished. The piston came within 1/32" of the original cylinder head and the small size of the cylinder wouldn't allow room for valves and an ordinary size spark plug.

I started by boring a chunk of aluminium bar, leaving a step to provide a register in the bore. The bolt holes are not evenly spaced at 120 degrees which made marking out more fun..

The spark plug needs to sit dead vertical, it would look awful if slightly off centre so I took great care in the marking out:

Milling a flat for the spark plug to seal on, the hole is tapped M14x1.25.

I decided to mill the cooling fins, that required use of the 3" rotary table and an adapter had to be made to fit that onto the lathe. I started by chopping up a suitable chunk of steel plate.

Once milled square, I milled slots and then located the bolts.

The finish isn't quite what I'd hoped but it's turned out OK and should do the job.

The next step is the cylinder head - I'm thinking about how the original could be modified at the moment, it would look right if I can use it.

You show a remarkable talent for one so young Phill, and with little formal training, your actually doing things that most newly qualified apprentices would not be able to tackle.
