Default Ronaldson-Tippet N type

As I've just restored a Lister 3.5 CS and am just starting work on a Bamford SD1, my neighbour decided to drop up a Ronaldson-Tippett N type petrol engine which had been sitting in his shed for years and wasn't working.

I know virtually nothing about it but it looked fairly complete including water hopper.

I only had a brief go at it. Removed carby and fuel tank and dismantled and cleaned both. Dismantled and cleaned fuel suction pipe into tank.Released frozen governor linkages etc, new spark plug. It has spark on cranking. Compression is good.

Put it all back together. On cranking im getting a little smoke out the exhaust but also some blowback from around the carby area. Initial thoughts?

The timing probably needs looking at?

Haven't taken the head off or even looked at the magneto yet.

As I said i know virtually nothing about these engines.

If the smoke is blowing back through the carburettor then Your inlet valve isn't seating properly. If it's blowing back from around the carburettor area then it could be a dodgy "manifold" gasket or head gasket. How "good" is the compression? You'd be better stripping it all down if it's been stood for a long time, cleaning and checking all the parts for wear or breakage, rather than just trying to run it "blind", and risk causing damage.

G'day Cam, from across the ditch. The R and T N is a very good engine. I restored one many years ago It would start with out a crank handle, just by pulling over the flywheel.

I have just finished restoring, but waiting for the magneto to come back from an overhaul, a NA [air cooled]

I think yours will need a valve grind. If it has an impulse mag the timing should be OK.

Thanks for the replies.

Looks like a strip down job then, which is ok by me, I'll learn something about this engine. Not so good for my neighbour who i think was hoping I'd get it going in a day or so.

Apparently he bought it years ago to fix up and never got started.

When i get time, I'll start on it and let you know how it goes.

It looks fairly simple, just from a cursory look, so fingers crossed.

Hello Cam,
If an engine is free, has spark, fuel and some compression then it is worth trying a start. Valves may just have some grit or carbon lodged under them. Take the sidecover off the tappet box (below/behind the tank) and with piston on compression stroke, lift the valve stems with a screwdriver etc, and allow them to snap shut a few times. Then see if you have restored compression enough for a start. No point in looking for head gaskets and valve grinding gear if it's not needed. Enjoy the project. Good little motor you have there. Decided to take the head off and have a good look.

Filthy of course. Gave it all a good clean. Valves were dirty but operating, but gave them a good clean up. Gave head a good clean up.

Totally stripped and cleaned carby. Removed a cleaned governor linkages and checked governor etc. Cylinder looked ok.

Plate says this is a Gippsland and Northern co-operative 3hp at 1000rpm.

Assuming this is a rebadged Ronaldson-Tippett N type.

Will give it a paint and put it all back together and see how it goes....

Put it all back together. Got it to fire for about 4 to 5 compressions then stops. Definitely getting blow back out through the carby so I'm guessing it's the inlet valve not seating correctly. Will take it apart again over the next few days and see if I can do any adjustments otherwise I guess it's a grind.

Should be able to check tappet clearance with a feeler gauge with the sideplate removed, and as long as it has a few thou clear, it should run. If still leaking then guess you need to look at grinding and/or refacing valves, good luck,
