I must be having brain fade, the only spring in the pumps is to push the piston/plunger back up, the steel/brass balls float under the unions so that when the plunger goes down pressure causes the inlet ball onto its seat and the outlet opens passing fluid and when the plunger goes up the reverse happens sucking in fluid.
