Scarf joints is the way to go, there was an something in SE magazine many, many years ago about doing this, all you need is some GOOD contact glue and a clamp.

I jointed the leather belts in a grain store with Evo stick contact adhesive with no problems, if you want a nice mechanical joint you can punch some holes in the belt over the scarfed area and cut some groves between the holes and then "stitch" it with some 1.5mm copper wire
