I'm thinking this is referring to the A range diesels (AA, AB, AC and AD), or maybe shorthand for the Alpha range. Certainly not the old A range of petrol engines.

Also available and sold in large numbers as kits for the amateur engineer to build to his own design of additional bits...

Mk 20 and 25 engines could be fitted with either the standard Villiers carb or the Zenith 24T-2 carb depending on application. This is regardless of whether the engine is an early or late example.
