Removeable plate is so that the oil filler can be fitted either side if there are access issues. Some do have the date cast onto various parts, the letter 2 could mean two horsepower?

Mine has a jackshaft to bring the speed down to a nice steady stroke, as Martin said some use a blunt blade or fit it upside down but I prefer to actually cut steel...
