Apologies for pedantry - but strictly speaking it's a scroll saw, i.e powered fret saw with table. That said I don't recognise it but it looks a sturdy piece of kit.

Nothing like that on my A1 but it's obviously meant to be there as the casting has a gap in the fins for the boss. Nothing shown in manual either. Interesting.

A little off piste - but my woodworking lathe has a Variomatic style 'transmission' which I regularly lubricate with dry PTFE spray.Works a treat with very smooth speed control.

Yup - also had one . Terrifying that the clutch only operated on the wheels so teeth started as soon as you turned it over. Got rid to a mate who keeps horses.
