The No.3 was the largest capstan made with flat belt drive availability, and was eventually replaced entirely by the No.3A with geared head and oil immersed clutches. Powered saddle feed was standard, as was the "Swing Forward" bar feed, which was patented by Ward.
Centre height was 6½" and the automatic chuck would accept up to 1½" bar stock. This machine is very similar in appearance and equipment to the Ward 2A. The overhead bar support feature of the 2A and 3A is missing, as the headstock was not high enough to provide a mounting for this item.
