Don’t get me started on electric cars! I frequently get looks of disgust for driving a dirty, stinky Land Rover but I recon it’s still “greener” than disposing of a new car..

I think the powers that be are missing the problem - more needs to be done to keep the traffic flowing. When I lived in the Tunbridge Wells area, a “pollution monitoring” station was installed at a well known traffic blackspot. Years later, they eventually got the traffic lights right and got the traffic flowing, the levels air pollution more than halved.

(Perhaps a good start would be teaching drivers proper lane discipline and what to do when you get four of them!)

The governments like the idea of moving the pollution out of their city centres, into somebody else's back yard, which is all that electric vehicles do.

When an electric car can make 220bhp and 450 ftlbs for 400 miles, then take 5 minutes to recharge I might change my mind...

I am stupid enough to believe that electric cars are the way forward.

But I can't see us rallying rows of electric motors.

You're right, and I chose my words poorly...

I meant, I can't believe there is anybody who is naive enough to think that electric vehicles are the way forward - right now.

Ultimately, I'm sure we will all drive electric vehicles, and our great-grandchildren will look back and wonder what on earth we were doing with heat engines.

However...

Right now, carrying stored energy is just bonkers and won't make sense until somebody makes the leap forward that is required to produce the energy "on board". Possibly fusion, or chemical, or something I can't even imagine (if I could then our problems would be over, and I would be rich!)

Ah! the sun.
I'm expecting to have the roof surveyed on Monday; with the view to have photovoltaic solar panels fitted.

Sorry but I just can't see you getting enough panels on the roof of a car to keep it charged up.

Neil.

Oh! I'm not silly; I'm going to have them fitted under the floor as well.

Default Internal combustion cars.

A little while ago I attended a lecture by the advisor to the government on transport. I suggested that I was helping the planet by keeping a 40 year old car on the road. I was put firmly in my place; new internal combustion cars are so clean, and are becoming cleaner all the time, that I should be changing my car every three years! As to the pollution caused by making batteries; the answer was simply that technology will come to the rescue!
